Siliguri, 08 July: VIOLENCE has erupted in some parts of Darjeeling Hills following the death of a youth due to bullet injury at Sonada ~ about 15 km ahead of Darjeeling town.

Jinday Bhutia, the elder brother of deceased Tashi Bhutia (31) lodged a complaint at Sonada police station stating that Tashi was shot dead by CRPF jawans around 11 pm last night. A resident of Sonada’s Changkhola area, Tashi had gone out to buy medicine from Sonada bazaar area for Jindey, the complaint reads.

It is not yet clear as to why would CRPF jawans, deployed in different parts of the Hills in view of the unrest since early June, fire at someone out to buy medicine. Sources claimed that the youth was an activist of the Gorkha National Liberation Front.

Police authorities have not yet accepted that CRPF jawans actually shot the Tashi, even as residents today morning found on the spot four empty shells of 7.62 mm bullets that are used in INSAS rifle. This automatic rifle is mostly used by paramilitary forces and the specialised troops of various state police.

Today morning, Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) supporters in hundreds gathered in front of Sonada police station and began agitating by placing Tashi’s body on the road.

The assemblage soon turned into a mob that started pelting stones at police and set fire to the Sonada traffic police booth. With the mob going on the rampage on the stretch between Sonada police station and Sonada railway station, security forces eventually resorted to firing teargas shells to disperse the crowd.

At the time of filing this report, the mob has set fire to Sonada police station as well and pitched battle is on between GJM supporters and security forces. Senior IPS officer Jawed Shamim and Darjeeling SP Akhilesh Chaturvedi have arrived at the spot to contain the violence.

Amidst this, angry over the incident at Sonada, another set of GJM supporters have torched a police vehicle near Darjeeling railway station. Similar violence is on in other parts of Darjeeling town such as Chowk Bazar.
