Diamond Harbour: Two teenage sons of an anti-Trinamool Panchayat poll candidate have been abducted from their house at Bhangar in South 24-Parganas allegedly by Trinamool strongman Arabul Islam and his aides.
This is to coerce their mother Fatima Bibi to withdraw her candidature from Polerhat-II gram panchayat seat, the anti-Trinamool Jomi Jibika O Paribesh Raksha Committee (Land Livelihood & Environment Protection Committee) has alleged. The last day for withdrawing candidature is tomorrow.
Fatima is one of the nine candidates from Bhangar who had filed nominations through WhatsApp so to evade Trinamool violence. The Calcutta High Court in a landmark judgment made the State Election Commission to validate the nomination.
“Having failed to stop our nomination, Trinamool has now resorted to coercion to make us withdraw the candidature. Some 30-odd men led by Trinamool leader Arabul Islam forayed into my house this morning and took away my two sons Riyazul and Nazibul Islam,” Fatima said.
According to her, her sons were kept in confinement at Arabul’s residence at Dakshin Gazipur village and they were assaulted. “They made my sons call me over the phone and ask for withdrawing my nomination as a ransom for their release,” she added.
Fatima soon lodged an FIR at Baruipur police station naming Arabul and some of his aides. Leaders of the Jomi Jibika O Paribesh Raksha Committee have separately e-mailed a complaint to the SP of Baruipur police district. Police, however, are yet to arrest anyone in this connection.
Late this afternoon, Fatima’s elder son Nazibul has managed to escape from the confinement of Arabul gang but younger son Riyazul is still in their custody.
