Kolkata: Getting swayed by physical beauty, a 20-year-old youth in Kolkata had married a woman double his age. Two years later, he has now paid for the marriage literally with both his ears!

Muhammad Tanvir of Narkeldanga North Road in central Kolkata had married Mumtaz Bibi (40) from his neighbourhood allegedly after being “trapped” by a friend of his elder brother. Soon after the marriage in 2016, the youth started living with his wife Mumtaz in her parental house.

It, however, did not take Tanvir long to get disillusioned as Mumtaz allegedly started “torturing” him on one pretext or the other. To evade this, the youth got into the habit of running away from his wife’s house quite often. But every time, the family members of his wife would trace and drag him back to Mumtaz.

According to Tanvir, the last time he fled was this Monday (16 July) evening. He went into hiding at Mallickpur in South 24-Parganas. The escape, however, did not last long. Mumtaz’s family caught him and brought him back to the Narkeldanga house yesterday night.

“After this, Mumtaz and her sisters started beating him for running away. At one point, Mumtaz trained a gun on me and chopped off both my ears with a kitchen knife. Following this, I fainted. They left me alone assuming that I am dead. Seizing this opportunity, on regaining consciousness, I escaped from the house,” Tanvir says.

With blood oozing from his ears, Tanvir was spotted running through the street in the wee hours today by some of his neighbours. They rushed him to the NRS Medical College and Hospital at Sealdah.

Subsequent to this, his mother lodged an FIR against Mumtaz and her sisters at the Narkeldanga police station accusing them of trying to kill her son. The accused wife and her sisters have since gone into hiding.
