Barasat: POLICE in North 24-Parganas district have arrested a middle-aged woman on charges of compelling her husband to commit suicide through her extra-marital affair.
The woman has been identified as Pallima Basu and the deceased husband’s name is Dibakar Basu alias Malay. They had been married for 17 years and were living with their two children at Gaighata locality.
In the FIR lodged at Gaighata police station by Dibakar’s relatives, it has been alleged that of late Pallima got involved in an extra-marital affair with a youth from the neighbourhood named Sujay.
Dibakar being a goods vehicle driver often used to stay away from home. Taking advantage of this, Pallima allegedly used to invite Sujay home and used to get intimate. Dibakar somehow got a wind of this and warned Pallima to come out of the illicit relationship.
Despite this, Pallima allegedly continued to pursue the affair. On 26 February, Dibakar fought with her over this and then drank poison. With the help of neighbours, Pallima took Dibakar to a hospital and he was admitted.
After battling it in the hospital bed for seven days, Dibakar breathed his last on 5 March. Following his death, his relatives lodged an FIR at Gaighata police station yesterday accusing wife Pallima of abetting the suicide.
Police have arrested Pallima and have launched a manhunt for her boyfriend Sujay, who has gone into hiding.
