Midnapore: A wild elephant has trampled a man to death at Nayagram in Jhargram district when he went to a forested area to defecate.
Ramchand Mandi, 65, was a poor man who survived on whatever he could earn as daily wage. His family does not have a toilet in the house and hence, they go to the nearby forested area daily to relieve themselves.
Following his daily routine, Mandi went to the forest early this morning to defecate. It was during this that a wild elephant wrapped him with its trunk and flung into the air. Once Mandi fell on the ground, the elephant trampled him dead.
Family members discovered this when they ventured into the forest areas as Mandi did not return after a long time. The villagers then informed the forest officials, who came and sent the dead body to Jhargram District Hospital for post-mortem.
People of several villages in nearby areas have said that a large herd of wild elephants has entered Jhargram from Dalma forest and they have damaged a large tract of paddy filed at Manikpara area.
Despite repeated appeals, forest guards are not doing enough to either drive back the herd into the forest or kept it confined to some specific area, they have alleged.
