Kolkata: RIDING high on the 11 per cent year-on-year growth in its utility vehicle sales in Bengal and Sikkim, Mahindra & Mahindra today launched in Kolkata a new avatar of its popular SUV ~ the Scorpio.

This comes 15 years since the automobile giant had introduced Scorpio to the Indian roads in 2002 and which eventually became its second most popular SUV. Bolero still remains at no 1 for the company, which enjoys the largest market share in the country with about 30 per cent of the sales.

Speaking at the launch, Amit Sagar, the vice-president, sales, Mahindra & Mahindra Automotive, said that the new Scorpio comes with the higher power of 140 bhp and torque of 320 Nm, new 6-speed transmission that will add to the power and adventurous feel.

“It is high on safety features with dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), collapsible steering column and side intrusion beams, panic brake indication, engine immobiliser, etc,” he said.

Being made available in six variants, S3, S5, S7 (120 bhp), S7 (140 bhp), S11 (140 bhp), and S11 (140 bhp with 4WD), the ex-showroom price in Kolkata ranges between Rs 9.98 lakhs to Rs 16.36-lakhs.

Sagar said that with the company recording about 11 per cent year-on-year sales growth for SUV in the Bengal and Sikkim market, they hope that the new variant of the Scorpio too will be a hit.

“Right now we are selling about 3,000 Scorpio per annum in the region. The target is to surpass the 11 per cent growth in SUV sales with the help of the new Scorpio,” he said. Interestingly, Bihar and Jharkhand have so far provided Scorpio the highest sales out of the 6-lakh units that the company has sold in the country so far.
