Bolpur: A section of farmers, whose land was acquired at Shibpur on the outskirts of Bolpur town for setting up industries, today took out a rally opposing Mamata Banerjee government’s move at setting up housing projects there.
This happened on a day the Chief Minister was holding an administrative meeting at Gitanjali Auditorium at Bolpur to review development projects in the district of Birbhum.
The farmers, shun of a political banner and, equipped with placards, took out the protest march at Shibpur.
They shouted slogans saying that either set up industry on the acquired land or return the land to us. Also, slogans were shouted saying that the administration will not be allowed to organise fairs and gaming events of the land meant for industries.
At the fag end of its tenure, the previous Left Front government had acquired 300 acres land at Shibpur for setting up industry.
But in the past decade, not a single brick has been laid for any industry on the acquired plot.
Amidst this, Mamata Banerjee last year announced that a housing project and a state university will be set up on the acquired land. Since then, the farmers have been holding protests at irregular intervals.
This 29 December, a section of the farmers had tried to stop a state-government organised fair on the acquired plot. During this, they had got into a scuffle with the police.
