Kolkata: A 45-year-old woman has died after falling from a high-rise tower at South City in Kolkata today noon. She is suspected to have committed suicide.
Sonali Aikat, a chartered accountant by profession, originally hailed from Ballygunge Place in the city where she lived with her parents. She had taken a flat on rent in South City’s Tower-III on the 18th floor.
Shefali Mondal, who worked as a part-time maid at the flat, has told police that Aikat mostly used to stay at Ballygunge Place and used to occasionally visit South City flat to get it dusted.
Today morning, she came on such a visit. Mondal was sweeping the floor of a bedroom and Aikat was seated on a sofa in the living room. After finishing her task, when Mondal came to the living she couldn’t find Aikat in the flat.
Out of suspicion, she went to the balcony and looked down to find that Aikat was lying below in a pool of blood. It was around 12.25 pm then. Even before the maid raising an alarm, the private security guards deployed on South City premises noticed this and alerted Jadavpur police station.
Police came and rushed Aikat to MR Bangur Hospital at Tollygunge. Doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police haven’t found a suicide note either on Aikat or in the flat. They have decided to talk to her parents to find out whether she had run into a dispute with anyone recently.
Deceased Aikat used to teach at a charitable school for underprivileged children on a voluntary basis. She had visited Andaman & Nicobar Islands last year.
