Kolkata, 15 February: A homemaker and her nine-month old baby have been found dead in their flat at Salt Lake’s EE Block.

Cops from Bidhannagar East police station went to EE Block’s Sourav Abasan this evening on receiving a call and found Poulami Raut hanging from the ceiling fan in a bedroom. Her life-less nine-month old baby was tied to her waist with a piece of cloth.

The incident took place when the deceased homemaker’s father-in-law and mother-in-law were in another room of the same flat on first floor. Poulami’s eight-year old son, who studies in class-II, was with them.

According to the in-laws, it was their grandson who first discovered that his mother had bolted the door of her bedroom from inside and was not opening it for a long time. On being alerted by the little boy, the in-laws banged on the door repeatedly but got no response.

It was then that they first called up their son, Anup Raut, who works for IBM; and then called up the Bidhannagar East police station. Police came and broke open the door to find Poulami hanging with her baby.

Police have taken the deceased woman’s husband and the in-laws to the police station for questioning. Her eight-year old son too has been taken to the police station to get a clue as to what led to the death of his mother and baby sibling.

Neighbours of the Raut who live in the same apartment said that the family had been staying here for over a year now on rent. “We never heard any quarrel in the family. Deceased Poulami used to maintain a formal relationship with the others in the apartment and never mixed up very well,” said a neighbour Mala Ghosh.
