Barasat: Police today retrieved the decomposed dead body of an elderly man who died at his residence at Naihati in North 24-Parganas two days ago but could not be cremated for want of help from the neighbours.
The incident has taken place at Borda Road in Ward 7 of Naihati Municipality area. Deceased Amarnath Pal used to run a grocery shop at Arabinda Road in the town and live with his aged younger sister Sarbani Pal. Both the brother-sister was unmarried.
Amarnath was taken ill last week and stopped going to his shop. He passed away at his residence on Sunday morning (13 May). According to his sister Sarbani, soon after her brother’s death, she had informed their immediate neighbours but nobody came forward for the cremation.
Being aged and in frail health, Sarbani could not arrange for the cremation. She thus kept the dead body in a room and lived in an adjacent one for the past two days. Unable to withstand the stench, their neighbours finally alerted Naihati police station today morning.
Police came and sent the dead body to Barrackpore for post-mortem. The neighbours have denied the charge that they did not come for the cremation. Instead, they have alleged that Sarbani did not inform anyone about the death of her elder brother.
