Hooghly: Workers have stalled operations at a private wagon manufacturing factory in Hooghly district over irregular salary.
The workers have announced that until and unless the management gives a firm commitment about paying salary by the 10th of every month, they will attend the factory but will not work.
This has happened at the Hindustan Engineering and Industries Ltd located near Delhi Road at Dankuni. The factory employs around 500 workers.
Srikanta Hazra, the secretary of the workers’ union, said that over the last several months the management has been delaying the disbursement of salary. On being confronted by the workers, the management cites financial crisis.
“This is even as the factory is getting steady and regular work orders and the workers are never idle. Initially, the pay delay stretched up to 20th of a month but now they are not even paying the after a month’s gap. This is not acceptable to us,” Hazra said.
None of the officials of the factory came forward to talk to news-persons. This is even as it is feared that unless the issue is resolved fast, this may escalate into a law and order issue at the factory.
