Kolkata: A youth has killed a middle-aged man by severing his head in full public view in Kolkata.
The chilling crime took place at Shimpukur Lane at Rajabagan in south Kolkata today afternoon. Due to public anger over the incident, police faced hardship in retrieving the dead body and in rescuing the killer whom people assaulted severely.
The murdered man has been identified as Ishamul Haque alias Chunnu Mia (48), a resident of Shyampukur in north Kolkata and, the arrested killer is Kalam Qureshi, a resident of Rajabagan. Kalam’s elder brother, Islam Qureshi was also allegedly involved in the crime and he is absconding.
Eyewitnesses said that around 2 this afternoon, Ishamul was walking through Shimpukur Lane when Kalam allegedly hurled him slangs. This made Ishamul turn to Kalam aggressively challenging the gesture.
In the course of a heated argument, Kalam’s elder brother Islam also arrived at the scene. A little later Islam picked up a chopper from a nearby meat shop and passed on to Kalam. Without losing a single minute, Kalam at once severed the head of Ishamul with the chopper. He collapsed by the road.
On seeing this, people from the vicinity rushed in and tried to nab Kalam. In the process, a local youth named Md Bashir suffered injuries from the chopper that Kalam was wielding.
But despite this, people managed to overpower Kalam and started assaulting him left and right. Learning about this, a large team from Metiaburz police station rushed in but angry people stopped them from taking Kalam into custody and also in retrieving the dead body of Ishamul.
After much persuasion police managed to rescue Kalam and sent him to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital as he has suffered injuries due to the mob assault.
Kalam has told police that Shamul used to tease his wife and that is why he has killed him. Police are verifying the claim.
The dead body of Ishamul has been sent to SSKM Hospital for post-mortem. A police picket has been posted at the crime scene to avert further violence.
